FOREWORD.

Never in the history of mankind has there been such a distortion of the truth of one innocuous gas and its supposed damaging effect on our world. That gas is Carbon dioxide, a harmless gas that is used in drinks, dry ice, and is essential to all plant life on earth. The deliberate untruths used to get a new government into power, create a world panic (or close too) and bring together leaders from all over the world to a highly expensive conference in Copenhagen that ended in abject failure. Clearly the more intelligent leaders are still taking everything that is said with a great deal of scepticism. And rightly so because it is the biggest con job since the 2000 computer millennium bug.

It began with Margaret Thatcher back in 1979 when she was a ‘rising’ politician who had recently been elected Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. The first female leader of a major western country and was searching for something to make her prominent and be to be taken seriously by her peers.

This was provided by Sir Crispin Tickell the U.K. Ambassador to the UN suggested that all international statesmen were scientifically illiterate. So a scientific literate person could win any summit debate on scientific matters. As Margaret Thatcher had a Bachelor of science degree in chemistry she should use it to her advantage.

Sir Crispin pointed out that if a ‘scientific’ issue were to gain international significance, then the UK’s Prime Minister could easily take a prominent role, and this could provide credibility for her views on other world affairs. He suggested that Mrs. Thatcher should campaign about global warming at each summit meeting. She did, and the tactic worked. Mrs. Thatcher rapidly gained the desired international respect and the UK became the prime promoter of the global warming issue.

There are a few reasons for writing this book. The greatest reason is frustration. Frustration at the deliberate untruths told (particularly during the election) about global warming.

Frustration about the so called incorrectly named man made ‘carbon emissions’ which of course is Carbon Dioxide emissions and what it is supposedly doing to our planet.

Frustration about the lies told about renewable energy and the deliberate distortion of its ability to replace fossil fuel energy generation. And frustration at the ridiculous carbon credit programme or Emission Trading Scheme and the many billions of dollars it will cost industry and all Australians.

Also the billions of dollars they are wasting chasing butterflies with so called clean coal technology which they have now admitted would not see any ‘Practical result’ until the year 2020 and beyond, ironically blaming the previous government for their abject failure.

The other reason for writing is to present the true hard facts about various forms of power generation including fossil fuels, nuclear energy, renewable energy and geo thermal energy. Plus energy generation for the future which is not what the politicians think.

Without doubt we all would wish for nice clean energy generation with no emissions, no by products, no noise, cheap and most of all, major amounts of it.

Unfortunately no matter what the politicians and so called experts tell you it only available in very limited quantities.

Everything has a price and so it is with power generation.

I worked for twenty five years in Power Stations. I was in the operating division and rose to the position over time of Power Plant Operator at Munmorah Power Station. Commissioning the 350 megawatt units and operating them through all types of conditions, some of which were rather terrifying and would test the nerve of the strongest man. Some of these experiences, some funny, others terrifying and also very dangerous to myself and my colleagues, are mentioned under memoirs later on in the book.

Our job had many functions including Power Plant operation and supervision, plant isolation for maintenance staff, fire fighting, safety of plant and personnel, operation of water chemical treatment, coal plant operation and much more. Our primary job was the safest and most efficient way to generate power using our skills to best fine tune the various sections of plant to gain maximum efficiency. We even had friendly competitions amongst ourselves to see who could get the best efficiency figures. These were referred to as b.t.u.’s per kilowatt (british thermal units) and the lower the figure the cheaper the power generated.

At maximum load we could get the efficiency figure to less than 10000 btu s per kilowatt. On the larger and later units this figure could be even lower.

We had a very wide and diverse understanding of the power industry and its function in this world. Pollution control was always (and still is) a number one priority of both operational and maintenance staff within the power station precincts.

On many of the units of today computers are far more advanced and have learnt and copied from our skills and now do a number of the operations on unit controls. Taking most of the critical operating decisions off the power station operation staff, although the units are now larger, such as the 4 x 660 Megawatts at Eraring and point Piper.

The skills required to operate these units take many years of training.

Chapter 1

The Computer Millennium bug continues.

The most talked about subjects for this decade and possibly this millennium are climate change, global warming, carbon dioxide emissions, carbon credits, Emission Trading Schemes, power generation and renewable energy. Never has there been so much said with so many untruths and distortions and used for political advantage.

And worse still, at an enormous expense to the community.

It is the biggest con and collection of lies since the 2000 computer millennium bug. Remember that one. Every computer throughout the world was going to crash unless everyone got these very expensive programmes installed into their computers. Major companies, banks, governments, etc. etc. could not take the risk and so spent immense fortunes to protect themselves against the possibility of a world computer crash. The results of such a crash would be catastrophic and the mind boggles at the possible results.

Guess what happened when the clocks changed to the next millennium. Yes you got it right, --nothing.

The people who could not or would not afford to spend that amount of money did nothing and when they all turned their computers on, on that fateful day, the computers continued as they had always done with NO changes.

Then the lame excuses started pouring forth about why it didn’t happen.

Governments, major and minor companies that had paid an absolute fortune were completely conned. - Brilliant really! Conned by the so called ‘experts’ and ‘scientists’ who once again proved they don’t have a clue, but their associates made an absolute fortune from installing the ‘new programmes’.

Once again the public are totally confused and mislead by what they hear from so many so called ‘experts’, ‘professors’, ‘scientists’ and politicians who in truth haven’t got a clue about the facts.

So they all present an endless array of untruths and political spin until they now actually believe it themselves. I have come across this again and again as I did my research.

This in itself could have its funny side except that they are so caught up in the distortions and lies that they are off chasing butterflies and spending billions of tax payers money on ridiculous energy projects that don’t have a chance in hell of succeeding.

The clean coal technology is a prime example, a massive expense with absolutely no practical possibility of success. If it were to succeed and actually eventuate into a power generation plant of sorts, it would cost ten times more at least to generate a very limited amount of electricity.

In Italy they have actually designed and built a clean coal power station. Hydrogen derived from the coal. And they proudly state that it will supply 20,000 homes. Sounds a lot but in actual fact most homes average 1.5kilowatts to 3 kilowatt, a total power of only 60 Megawatts.

The power output of many major power stations in Australia, particularly NSW is 2640 Megawatts, or 44 times more. I have listed most of them later on in the book for reference.

The total peak load power generated in Australia is approximately 50,000 Megawatts. Approximately 80% of this is from thermal coal fired power stations. Hydro Electricity mainly from the Snowy scheme provide 18% and 2% for other forms of power generation.

As you can see from the figures you would need nearly 12500 of these Italian “clean Stations’. Obviously this is ridiculous and very expensive. A massive waste of billions of dollars of tax payers’ money that is desperately needed for decent safe roads, more dams and hospitals, etc.

If they want to change to a ‘cleaner coal’ technology the answer is obvious. Gas fired power stations. In theory it would be good. They would be much cleaner overall. But it would be far more expensive, also there is a limited supply of gas and most important it would put many thousands of people out of work in the coal industries. Not that the state and federal governments would care about that. They have made it crystal clear they only have one agenda.

We will look at it in detail later and you will be able to judge for yourself what a phenomenal waste of tax payers money it is when compared to the more efficient, cheaper, reliable, and in spite of their lies, clean thermal power stations.

Another farce is the idea of pumping carbon dioxide underground to dispose of it. The mind boggles at the thought of the USA, China ,India, Russia, Europe, the UK and other countries all frantically pumping immense volumes of carbon dioxide, or CO2 as it is known, underground for hundreds of years and then not expect it to come out somewhere after an earth quake, a volcanic eruption or a plate shift. Again more ‘scientists and so called experts.

Even with the smallest amount of common sense and logic it tells you these people are off with the fairies. Or worst still, off the planet.

You can make anything look the truth and feasible if you tell enough deliberate distortions of the truth. The Nazis and Russians were very good at it.

Now it has become common practice in governments, big business and advertising. But woe betide any small company that tries the same tricks. They would hang them out to dry.

Take for example those pictures of all that pollution, as the T.V. advertisements infer, coming out of the power station cooling towers and steelworks chimneys. Those terrible clouds rising up to pollute the atmosphere.

Wait a minute. Take a closer look. Notice how those huge clouds of pollution suddenly disappear. They rise so far and then they are --gone –nothing. What does that tell you?

That’s right. It is only condensation, water as pure as that which comes out of your kettle is evaporating away into the atmosphere, where it will fall as pure rain on some fortunate ground.

No impurities, no pollution. But they convinced you it was a terrible pollution ‘destroying our planet.’ As they so succinctly put it.

Power Station Cooling Tower Evaporation Steelwork Coke Oven Chimneys. Condensation Note How The ‘Pollution ‘Disappears’ From Quenching The Red Hot Coke.

The purity of the water in the cooling towers and the condensation from the coke ovens is almost the same as that which comes out of your tap at home, which is 250 to 350 micromhos conductive. (A means of measuring purity of water.) Sea water is 25000 micromhos conductivity, very salty and very conductive.

The water in a power station boiler is the purest in the world, 2 to 4 micromhos conductivity or 125 to 250 times purer than drinking water. So any ‘polluting steam’ coming from power station boilers is from the purest of water.

People are lead to believe that water is a conductor. In fact it is an insulator. The chemicals in water are what make it conductive such as sodium, calcium, sodium chloride, impurities, etc.

Water inside the stator of a generator is even purer and you can read about that in the generator section of Thermal Power Stations.

Later we will look at how power stations including cooling tower work, etc.

Chapter 2

Carbon Dioxide.

Firstly Carbon Dioxide and pollution of any form are totally different subjects. Every intelligent thinking person is totally opposed to any form of pollution. Whether it is filthy black coal dust, smoke or ash blowing into the atmosphere, dust billowing up off dirt roads, noise from heavy industry or visual pollution such as graffiti or filthy buildings.

In the 1950s to 1980s for example – the fallout from the Port Kembla Steelworks and surrounding industries was measured in so many tons per square feet per year. You could not park your car without it being cover in coal dust and ash. Now it is complete changed and the air is clean and fresh thanks to the efforts of responsible governments bringing in regulations to clean up the manufacturing industry.

Another excellent example of pollution control is the River Thames. At one time before the turn of the century even raw sewage was emptied into the river along with all sorts of industrial and domestic waste and rubbish.

Now for the first time in over a hundred years fish are now seen the length of the river.

But Carbon Dioxide is not a pollutant. It is a harmless inert gas that is used in drinks, dry ice and in many industries. It is also a essential part of plant life and our existence. It is referred to as a ‘greenhouse gas.’ As if that was some bad thing. But without ‘greenhouse gases’ our planet would have an average temperature of minus 19 degrees instead of the more liveable plus 14 degrees.

The “greenhouses gases’ are;

Water vapour 97%

Carbon Dioxide 2%

Methane 1%

Note that carbon dioxide is a very small percentage of ‘greenhouse gases’ and greenhouse gases constitute only

Only 1 percent of the atmosphere.

Below is the proof that increasing CO2 in the atmosphere would enhance plant growth which in turn would give off more oxygen.

Theabove

P importance, comprise:

Carbon Dioxide is at the centre of the argument about climate change and global warming and the frantic efforts to capture and control it.

Carbon dioxide is formed during complete combustion of fossil fuels such as coal or timber. It is created when one atom of carbon (C) combines with two atoms of oxygen (O) forming CO2 i.e. carbon dioxide.

If combustion is incomplete the carbon atom will combine with only one atom of oxygen to form carbon monoxide a poisonous toxic gas. This is usually caused by insufficient oxygen being available to complete combustion.

Carbon dioxide is also emitted by volcanoes, geothermal hot springs, forest and bush fires, ground emissions and let’s not forget the poor old cow when it flatulates. At one time the government nut cases even wanted to put a tax on It.!!!

How ridiculous is ridiculous;

Farmer Brown says to the tax collector-‘My cows don’t flatulate, they are on a special pill,!!

The tax collector then has to watch every cow and try to catch them farting to prove him wrong.

Peter Garrett would be the ideal man for that job.!!!

Carbon Dioxide is used by plants and trees during photo synthesis. The carbon atom is absorbed by the plants and trees and free oxygen is released back into the atmosphere. This process absorbs a major amount of atmospheric CO2 . The other major percentage is absorbed by the oceans.

The air that we breath is made up of a number of gases but it is mostly nitrogen at 78 percent. An inert harmless gas .

The second most plentiful gas is Oxygen at 20.95 percent. The core of all life. Without it we could not exist. It readily combines with other atoms to forms various elements.

The third most present gas is Argon at .935 percent, a colourless, odourless and tasteless gas that is inert and does not combine readily with other elements.

The fourth most present gas is Carbon Dioxide at .038 percent. Or 380 parts per million in ratio. The stated percentage of CO2 in air.

The rest of the gases in tiny amounts are Neon, Methane, Helium, Krypton, Hydrogen, Xenon, Ozone, Nitrogen Dioxide, and Iodine.

To put the percentage of Carbon Dioxide in air in a clearer perspective;

If you had a room 12ft x 12ft x7ft or 3.7mtrs x 3.7mtrs x 2.1mtrs, the area carbon dioxide would occupy in that room would be .25m x 25m x .17m or the size of a large packet of cereal.

Australia emits 1 percent of the world’s total carbon Dioxide and the government wants to reduce this by twenty percent or reduce emissions by .2 percent of the world’s total CO2 emissions.

What effect will this have on existing co2 levels?

By the figures stated by the ‘believers’ the CO2 in air has risen from .034% to .038% in 50 years.

Assuming this is correct, the world has increased in 50 years = .004 percent.

Per year that is .004 divided by 50 = .00008 percent. ( Getting confusing -but stay with me)

Of that because we only contribute 1% our emissions would cause CO2 to rise .00008 divided by 100 = .0000008 percent.

Of that 1% we supposedly emit the governments wants to reduce it by 20%

Which is 1/5th of .0000008 = .00000016 percent effect per year we would have on the world CO2 emissions based on their own figures.

That would equate to a area in the same room the size of a small pin.!!!

For that they have gone crazy with the ridiculous trading schemes, Solar and roofing installations, Clean coal technology. Renewable energy, etc, etc.

How ridiculous it that.

Meanwhile the main carbon dioxide generators including China and the USA have done VERY little, if anything, to be involved.

CO2 emissions. By country.

China,(21.5%)

U.S.A.(20.2%),

Europe,(13.8%),

Russia (5.5%),

India (5.3%),

Japan (4.6%)

The carbon dioxide emission we would supposedly reduce would be a teaspoonful compared to the rest of the world. Destroying our coal industry or at best causing major damage just to support the irrational ideas from Canberra and the state governments is economic madness.

China for example is increasing their CO2 emissions every three months by more than the whole of Australia’s carbon dioxide emissions

Reducing Co2 Emissions By 20%

The government of the day has stated they will reduce our CO2 emissions by 20% by the year 2020. They want to do this by reducing coal fired power stations and introducing renewable energy power sources.

Just like that.!!! Hasn’t anyone told them if it was possible we would have done it a long time ago or whenever it was possible. Once again they’re off with the fairies.

Of course nice clean energy generation would be ideal but it is not possible on a large scale.

Why? Well there are a number of reasons but primarily because most renewable energy can only be produced in small amounts and none of them could generate that much power separately or collectively. Also the cost is prohibitive and the supply is unreliable and inconsistent.

How much power generation is 20% ?

Australia’s peak load generation is approximately 50,000 megawatts. 20% of that is 10000 megawatts and this is the amount of renewable energy we would have to find.
